Columbia River sunset - OR. and WA. On November 4, 1805, the Corps met the Watlala people in this area and were introduced to the Wapato root. The root had an agreeable taste and would be a major food source over the coming months. The spirits of the men were high as they pressed on toward their final objective, the Pacific Ocean.
